How Refrigerators Actually Work, and Why They Break Down
A refrigerator is a heat pump running on a duty cycle, not a static box that stays cold. The hermetically sealed compressor pressurizes refrigerant, which condenses to a liquid at the rear or bottom condenser coils, then expands through a capillary tube or expansion valve into the evaporator coil, where it absorbs heat from inside the cabinet and boils back into a gas. That compressor is supported by a start relay and a run or start capacitor that give it the torque to overcome starting load; when those electrical components weaken from heat cycling, the compressor hums, trips its internal overload, and shuts down without ever reaching temperature. Restricted airflow across the condenser coils, usually from dust or pet hair, forces the compressor to run longer and hotter to move the same amount of heat, which is one of the most preventable causes of premature failure we see.
Two other systems account for most of the calls we run. The defrost system, made up of a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat or bi-metal switch, and a timer or adaptive defrost control board, periodically melts frost off the evaporator coil so airflow keeps moving; when the heater or thermostat fails, frost builds into a solid block, airflow stops, and the fridge runs constantly while staying warm. The ice maker module, whether a simple mechanical unit or an electronic model with a fill valve solenoid, mold thermostat, and ejector motor, is a common point of leaks and jams, and door gaskets lose their magnetic seal and flexibility over years of opening and closing, letting warm humid air infiltrate and forcing the compressor to work harder than it should.
Beyond the compressor and defrost system, refrigerators rely on smaller components that fail independently and are frequently mistaken for bigger problems. The condenser fan motor, which draws air across the condenser coils to reject heat, is a separate part from the compressor itself, and its failure produces the same warm-refrigerator symptom as a bad compressor but at a fraction of the repair cost; distinguishing the two is one of the more valuable parts of a proper diagnostic. Homes in shore communities from Long Beach and the Rockaway-adjacent South Shore up through the North Shore's Gold Coast towns deal with salt-laden coastal air that accelerates corrosion on rear condenser coils, compressor terminals, and electrical connections, and it degrades rubber door gaskets faster than we see inland. On the water supply side, much of Suffolk County runs on private well water with mineral content well above what western Nassau and NYC-fed systems deliver, and that hard water is a direct driver of ice maker fill valve and water line scale buildup, which is one of our more common warm-weather service calls.
Electrical infrastructure age compounds these installation issues. Original Levittown-era wiring was never designed around today's larger-capacity refrigerators with multiple compressors, dispensers, and electronic control boards drawing meaningfully more current than a 1950s icebox replacement did, and we still find refrigerators plugged into outlets that lack the dedicated circuit modern manufacturers recommend. Long Island's exposure to nor'easters and hurricane-remnant storms adds another layer: power outages followed by the voltage fluctuations of grid restoration are hard on compressor start components and control boards alike, and we see a reliable uptick in refrigerator service calls in the weeks following major storm events, concentrated in older homes without surge protection ahead of the refrigerator's outlet.

Door dispenser paddle switches and auger motors on models with in-door water and ice dispensers are a similar story: they fail independently of the cooling system and account for a steady, low-cost share of the calls we run separate from anything related to temperature.
