The heating element, used both to boost wash water temperature and to power the dry cycle by radiant heat, is a simpler resistive component that fails the way any heating element does, leaving dishes clean but wet at the end of the cycle, or in units that use the element for sanitizing rinses, failing to reach the temperature needed for that cycle to complete.
It's worth separating the circulation pump, which drives the spray arms during the wash phase, from the drain pump, which evacuates water between phases; on many modern dishwashers these are combined into a single dual-purpose pump and motor assembly, but on others they're distinct components with separate failure modes, and a unit that washes poorly but drains fine points to a different problem than one that fails to drain at all. The water inlet valve, which meters incoming water into the tub, is a further common failure point, and a valve that's stuck open causes overfilling while one that's stuck closed or partially clogged causes a cycle that never gets enough water to clean properly.
