The three common cooktop technologies fail in genuinely different ways because they generate heat differently. Gas cooktops ignite burners with either a spark igniter module or, on some models, a glow-bar system, and clicking that won't ignite is most often a dirty or moisture-affected igniter, a misaligned burner cap, or a failed igniter module, while uneven flame patterns usually trace back to a clogged burner port rather than any electrical fault. Electric coil cooktops heat a resistive element directly, similar to an oven's bake element, and coil burners fail the same way, developing a break or hot spot after enough thermal cycling, with the receptacle block underneath as a secondary common failure point from arcing over time.
Radiant glass-top electric cooktops place resistive elements or halogen heat sources beneath a ceramic glass surface, and while the heating elements themselves fail similarly to coil units, the glass surface itself is a distinct and common failure mode: thermal shock from a cold liquid hitting a hot surface, or impact from a dropped pot or heavy object, can crack the glass outright, which is a full surface replacement rather than a component repair. Induction cooktops are different again, using electromagnetic coils that only generate heat directly in ferromagnetic cookware rather than heating the cooktop surface itself, and their failures center on the induction coil's control electronics and cooling fan rather than any heating element at all, making them mechanically closer to a piece of power electronics than a traditional cooktop.
Downdraft cooktops, which pull cooking exhaust down through the unit itself rather than relying on an overhead hood, add a blower motor and ductwork routed below the countertop, and that blower is a distinct failure point from the cooking elements themselves; a downdraft unit that heats normally but has lost exhaust function is a separate repair involving the blower motor or its ducting rather than anything related to the burners or elements. Knob and switch assemblies on any cooktop type are also a frequent minor failure point, since they see more physical wear from daily use than almost any other component on the appliance.
Thermal cutoff switches, present on most electric coil and radiant glass cooktops as a safety backup independent of the main control board, occasionally trip and disable a burner even when the visible heating component is intact, and checking this switch is a standard step before condemning an element or the control board itself.
What Long Island Homes Do to Cooktops
Utility access again plays a real role here: gas cooktops remain common in older, natural gas-served Nassau and western Suffolk communities, while some outlying Suffolk towns without gas utility service rely on electric coil, radiant glass, or propane setups instead, and increasingly we see induction cooktops specified in higher-end kitchen renovations across North Shore estate properties and newer construction, where the appeal is faster heat response and easier glass-surface cleaning.
Kitchen renovation patterns matter for installation quality specifically. Levittown-era homes being updated with new cooktops sometimes have electrical service that predates the higher amperage draw of induction cooktops, requiring panel or circuit upgrades that get missed if the appliance swap isn't coordinated with an electrician; we occasionally find induction units underperforming or tripping breakers because of exactly this kind of undersized circuit left over from an older electric coil installation.
In Suffolk County areas without natural gas utility service, propane-fueled cooktops are common, and they require correctly sized burner orifices and regulator settings specific to propane's different combustion characteristics compared to natural gas; a cooktop serviced or replaced without accounting for this distinction can show ignition or flame-quality problems that have nothing to do with a failed component and everything to do with an incorrect conversion kit or orifice size, an issue we check for specifically in propane-service areas.
Older Levittown-era kitchens retrofitted with newer cooktops sometimes retain original countertop cutouts sized for smaller, older appliance footprints, and installers working around that constraint occasionally compromise ventilation clearance beneath the cooktop, particularly relevant for induction units whose control electronics generate meaningful heat that needs to dissipate away from the cabinetry below.
Common Failure Patterns and Repair-vs-Replace Guidance

Induction cooktop calls are less frequent overall but skew toward control board and cooling fan issues when they do occur.
Igniters, burner caps, coil elements, and receptacle blocks are all inexpensive, sensible repairs. Cracked glass on a radiant cooktop is usually replaceable as a standalone surface on many models, which keeps it a repair rather than a full replacement, though on some integrated designs the glass and element assembly are sold as one unit, at which point cost relative to a new cooktop becomes the deciding factor. Induction control board failures are evaluated case by case given the higher cost of induction electronics relative to the unit's age.

The pre-holiday increase in cooktop calls mirrors the broader kitchen appliance pattern of heavier cooking volume surfacing marginal components that had been limping along under lighter everyday use.

On electric coil units, the terminal block beneath each burner receptacle is a frequent source of arcing and burnout that's easy to overlook if only the visible coil element is inspected.
